Behind the Score: Creating the Music of Crimson Moon

Originally posted 18 August 2026. Source: Steam News

This is the closest the dev team has come to a pure-mood post — no mechanics, no build-system tables, just "here is how we soundtracked this thing." It is also the most useful post if you care about whether Crimson Moon will feel like its gothic pitch.

The team

"Music Manager and Composer Steve Pardo and Audio Lead and Composer Christopher Wilson take you inside the recording process, alongside some of the incredible musicians bringing the score to life."

The credits read like a working film-score team. Pardo and Wilson are not streamers or game-audio generalists — they have a working relationship with live orchestra + choir recording, which is not a given even at AAA studios. Most game scores get done in bedrooms with sample libraries.

The brief

"Gothic high fantasy. Orchestra. Choir. Metal."

Three words for orchestra, choir, metal. The combination is unusual. You hear the orchestra + choir in the Cathedral scenes of Sanctus Clypeus. The metal kicks in during hunts, especially the boss fights. The contrast — sacred choral versus brutal distorted guitar — is the entire emotional pitch of the game in audio form.

What you should listen for

If you play the release with headphones:
  • The Cathedral theme is choral. Listen for layered soprano/alto lines under a single sustained bass drone. That is Sanctus Clypeus telling you "you are home."

  • The Wards theme is where the orchestra gets tense. Probably muted strings + low brass over a heartbeat-style percussion. The post does not say, but that is the standard gothic-game vocabulary.

  • The boss theme is where the metal comes in. The post implies the score shifts gear, not just tempo, when a boss appears. That is the right call — bosses need to feel like a different game.

  • Why this matters for the wiki

Soundtrack names, composer credits, track listing — all of that will be on this site within the first week of launch. The Crimson Moon soundtrack is a candidate for soundtrack-of-the-year lists in the indie space if the final mix lands the way the post implies it will.
