The Crusade Begins — Dev Log #1
Originally posted 10 June 2026 by the ProbablyMonsters team. Source: Steam News
The first dev log dropped two days after Summer Game Fest 2026, where ProbablyMonsters showed the first Crimson Moon trailer. It is short on mechanics but it tells you exactly who is making this game and what they want you to feel when you start a hunt.
Who is ProbablyMonsters
If you know Bungie's history, the name Harold Ryan rings a bell — he ran Bungie through Halo 3, Halo: Reach, and Destiny's launch era, then left in 2015 to start ProbablyMonsters. Crimson Moon is the studio's first big-ticket release. They have shipped smaller projects in between, but a gothic action-RPG of this size is what they have been building toward for almost a decade.
The studio leans into the idea that you build a "monster" of a team around the people who actually do the work — small core teams, lots of outsourcing, lots of trust. Whether that model holds for a game this ambitious remains to be seen, but the dev log has the quiet confidence of a team that has done this before at AAA scale.
What "Nephilim" actually means
The lore half of the post is mostly preamble, but the Nephilim pitch lands. You are a human-angel hybrid. Not half-human, half-angel in the soft "you're special" way — actually a weapon forged to push demons back out of a city that humans already lost once. The Knights of the Crimson Moon are the order that holds the line, and Sanctus Clypeus is their last redoubt.
"If you caught the Summer Game Fest trailer today, thank you for being here. We have a lot to share over the coming months, and this is where we'll be sharing it."
That is the whole post, basically. But it sets the tone: this is a studio that wants to talk to you like a developer, not a marketing team.
Why this matters if you are playing on day one
Dev Log #1 confirms three things you can take to launch:
Worth bookmarking if you like reading the dev's mind before playing.
