Crimson Moon Difficulty

Crimson Moon has six difficulty tiers, with Hellish at the top. The system is character-level gated (you can't access harder tiers until you've leveled up) and mid-run switchable in some cases.

Per the developer-run Crimson Moon Wiki (via crimsonmoonguide.online), the six tiers are:

The six tiers

TierApproximate HP / damage modifierUnlocked atNotes
1 — Story0.6x / 0.5xLevel 1Default. Accessible to anyone.
2 — Standard0.8x / 0.75xLevel 1Slightly harder than Story. Default for most players.
3 — Hard1.0x / 1.0xLevel 2Baseline "intended" difficulty per dev.
4 — Brutal1.2x / 1.5xLevel 5Enemy damage spikes. Parrying becomes essential.
5 — Nightmare1.5x / 2.0xLevel 8Boss-resistance affix tables expand.
6 — Hellish2.0x / 3.0xLevel 11Top tier. Most community builds ([RPJames](/builds/hellish-frost-reaper-rpjames/), [FIDISTI](/builds/frost-break-hellish-fidisti/)) showcase here.

Approximate values are community-claimed from the developer-run Crimson Moon Wiki; first-party sources do not publish exact multipliers.

What changes at each tier

  • Enemy HP scaling — higher tiers have more HP per enemy
  • Enemy damage scaling — higher tiers deal more damage per hit
  • Boss-resistance affixes — from Nightmare up, bosses roll more resistance affixes (see Status Effects for the affix system)
  • Drop rarity — higher tiers reward better gear drops (cross-reference Level Unlocks)
  • Elite / mini-boss density — Brutal and above have more elites per mission

When you can change difficulty

Per community play and the dev's "Helpful Resources" post:

  • Before a run — change freely at the War Table
  • Mid-run — change is not possible during a Ward run
  • Between runs — change freely at Sanctus Clypeus

Difficulty does not persist — if you start a Brutal run and die, you return to Brutal for the next run. There is no "you died too much" auto-nerf.

Hellish — what makes it different

Hellish is the top difficulty and the most-mentioned tier in launch-week community content. Per the Hellish Frost Reaper build and Frost BREAKS build:

  • Elite density is at its highest
  • Boss resistance affixes are stacked — Frost-resistant + Marked-immune combinations are common
  • Drop rates for high-rarity gear are noticeably higher
  • Angel Ascension charges faster (community-claimed), making the transformation system the central strategy

Hellish is also where the Poison Bleed build starts to underperform — Frost-scaling builds dominate the meta at this tier.

Co-op difficulty scaling

Per Co-op Guide, difficulty scales with the number of players in addition to the chosen tier:

  • 2-player co-op on Standard ≈ 1-player on Hard (rough rule of thumb)
  • 2-player co-op on Hard ≈ 1-player on Brutal

Specific scaling math is not in first-party sources; this is a community-derived heuristic.

The "I'm stuck" loop

The developer's Helpful Resources: Runs, Loadouts & Gear post explicitly addresses the "I keep dying" loop:

"If you're stuck on Brutal or Nightmare, drop to Hard for two runs, bank gear, then come back."

The intended loop is: drop difficulty → bank gear at higher rarity → return at higher difficulty. Per Loot & Progression, this is the only official progression loop for stuck players — there is no "give me free stuff" mechanic.
