The Game

About Crimson Moon

Crimson Moon is a single-player gothic action-RPG developed by ProbablyMonsters — a Seattle-area studio founded by former Bungie leadership — and published across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on September 1, 2026. The game is built around a roguelite structure: every hunt begins at Sanctus Clypeus, the player's fortified cathedral home base, and ends when the protagonist — a half-human, half-angel hybrid called a Nephilim — either clears the run or dies inside it.

The setting is the fallen city of Gildenarch, occupied by the Infernal Legion — an invading force of demons, undead, vampires, and the creeping fungal spread the developers call Hellgrowth. The Knights of the Crimson Moon are the player's faction: the last defenders of humanity's only stronghold. Combat is melee-focused and stamina-driven, with directional defense, executions, and a weapon-type-locked Weapon Arts system; there is no class, only the nine pieces of gear a Nephilim can equip at any moment.

What makes Crimson Moon worth following for the launch window is the speed of post-launch iteration. The game shipped on September 1 without keyboard remapping on PC — the single most-cited complaint in launch-week Steam reviews — and the dev team (internally known as Team Metal) had a working alpha keybinding patch in players' hands by September 3. Hotfix 1.0.1 followed on September 12 with rolling backup saves, a fix for the Egregore boss-fight crash, and camera improvements against large stationary bosses like Tyrigon and the Dry Rot King.

This wiki is built from publicly available information — Steam store descriptions, official Steam News posts, the PlayStation Blog, and the developer's Discord — with launch-week clustering of 499 English Steam reviews by theme. Every page cites its source. Where the developer has not yet confirmed something, we say so.

Mechanics Deep-Dive

Core Systems to Know

Four systems drive every minute of Crimson Moon. Understanding them prevents the most common launch-week complaints.

01

The Hunt Loop

Sanctus Clypeus · Wards · World Boss

A full run is three missions plus a World Boss. Returning to Sanctus Clypeus between those missions does not end your run; the Loadout Station stays locked until you either complete the run or die. Plan your loadout before you leave.

02

The Classless Build System

9 Slots · 4 Axes · 0 Locked Skills

Your Nephilim is whatever you equip. Four pieces of armor, two trinkets, a one-handed weapon + shield, and a two-handed weapon — that's the whole character. Weapon Arts are locked to weapon type, not stat budget, so swapping weapons genuinely changes how the game plays.

03

Purify and Gajov

Unlock at Common · Upgrade Raises Floor

Purifying an item permanently unlocks it at Common quality — regardless of what you found. Upgrading it at Gajov (the vampire blacksmith at Sanctus Clypeus) raises that item's minimum quality everywhere, permanently. Every upgrade permanently improves what the world can roll for you.

04

Nexus Gates

Mid-Run Build Decisions

Mid-run decision points where you choose between temporary Boons that last for the rest of the run. Multiple Nexus Gates per hunt let your build evolve as you go. They are not new gear — they are buff-style choices that augment your existing loadout.

Hotfix 1.0.1 — Egregore crash fixed, rolling backup saves

First post-launch hotfix. Rolling backup saves (your save is now backed up on every write, so a corrupted save falls back to the previous write). Camera and lock-on improved against large stationary bosses (Tyrigon, Dry Rot King). Egregore boss-fight crash fixed. Steam Deck ↔ PC save sync fixed. Co-op run progress now persists for clients (solo continuation if the host drops). HUD scaling added; keybinding UI fixes (custom bindings in prompts, distinct L/R Shift icons).

Roadmap — 1.0.1 this week, free content update teased

Team Metal posted the first post-launch roadmap. Hotfix 1.0.1 ships this week (camera, rolling backup saves, Egregore crash, progression-loss fixes); 1.0.2 later this month adds co-op + crossplay fixes, controller remap on console, and Boon UI; Update 1.1 is late October. The post closes with a tease of a free content update — no DLC plans named.

Patch 1.0.0.1 — keybinding is in

Alpha keyboard remapping and mouse sensitivity shipped two days after launch (build 162350). You can rebind every action and revert to defaults under Settings → Keyboard → custom profile. Multiple bindings, double-tap and hold inputs are not in yet. Camera, progression loss, UI scaling and crashes are named as next.

What 499 reviews actually say

We clustered 499 English reviews by theme. Controller play has the lowest negative share of any topic (15%); ultrawide the highest (63%). Art direction and the $19.99 price get praised even inside negative reviews. The camera is the most-cited complaint that is not a settings gap — and progression loss in co-op is the one open bug that can cost you real time.

Why your purified gear came back Common

Purifying unlocks the item, not the roll — it always banks at Common regardless of the rarity you found. Upgrading it at Gajov then raises that item’s minimum quality everywhere, permanently, across your whole loot pool. Also: the Loadout Station stays locked between missions because a full run is three missions plus a World Boss.

Dev post: systems mistaken for bugs

Team Metal published a clarification post rather than a patch, addressing the two systems generating the most bug reports: the locked Loadout Station and purification rarity. Their words: “some things being reported as bugs are actually game systems that we recognise aren’t currently explained clearly enough in-game.”

Quick Answers

Fast FAQ

The five questions players actually asked on day one.

How much does Crimson Moon cost? ▼

$19.99 Standard · $29.99 Deluxe. Deluxe adds the Ceremonial Armor Set (cosmetic), the Axe of the Gods weapon cosmetic, and post-launch expansion access. Owners of Standard can upgrade to Deluxe for $10.

Is there cross-play between platforms? ▼

Yes. PC (Steam + Epic), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S can all cross-play together; crossplay is enabled by default in the matchmaker. Cross-progression (carrying saves across platforms) is not yet confirmed.

Can I rebind keys and change mouse sensitivity? ▼

Yes — as of Patch 1.0.0.1 (September 3, 2026). Alpha keyboard remapping and a mouse sensitivity slider shipped two days after launch. Multiple-bindings-per-action and a FoV slider are still deferred.

Can I play solo? ▼

Yes — solo is fully supported. Two-player online co-op is optional. Per the official genre description: "venture through Gildenarch solo or with a friend."

What are Boons? ▼

Temporary buffs attached to gear, picked at Nexus Gates during runs. They increase damage, debuff enemies, restore health, regenerate flasks, and reward aggressive play. Boons reset between runs — they are not part of your meta-progression.
